Boulevard of Broken Dreams – Taliesin Arts Centre
Boulevard of Broken Dreams comes to Taliesin, Swansea on Thursday 12th February (7.30pm) opening a UK World Premiere tour. In this unique collaboration, two leading artistes in the fields of music and dance explore unpredictable encounters as different cultural influences merge with explosive and inspirational effect.
Jean Abreu is currently one of Britain’s most eagerly watched choreographers and performers. Currently based in London, he combines western contemporary movement with cultural traditions of Latin dance and capoeira from his native Brazil. Cardiff based composer Charlie Barber has a deserved reputation for combining musical influences from a variety of genres. Together they have created this stunning and insightful performance in which two quartets compete and converge on stage in a striking portrayal of the urban condition.
Four dancers, including Jean Abreu, are joined live on stage by the Cardiff based; Mavron String Quartet who will perform Barber’s original work. Charlie Barber is known for his passion to bring together musical genres and in this new piece, he combines Latin influences, world beats and live music with interweaved, electronically generated soundscapes.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams: The title has been widely used within art, literature, film and music, from Gottfried Heiman’s variation of the Edward Hopper painting (Nighthawk) to songs by Marianne Faithful and Green Day. Now John Abreu gives us his version.
